Yes alphabet zoo that old cartridge for the C64. This game helped me learn my ABC's and I wish educational games were this much fun these days. The game is basically a maze game with a big picture of something in the middle. The maze has letters scattered throughout it and your job is to go around the maze collecting the first letter of the picture in the middle of the maze before the time runs out. The letters disappear and reappear in the maze and when you get rid of one letter a new letter will appear somewhere else. Teleport spots are also in the maze and when you press the button on these spots you appear at a random point in the maze.
Doesn't this sound like fun to you?
I know, I know it isn't really that fun when you play by yourself, but play the two player option and then you have a great race on your hands. It's fun to see two crazy creatures running around the maze trying to get the most letters within the time limit. Sure you can't shoot each other, and you don't even bump into each other, but hey at least this educational game can be competitive. Sure my older brother was like 9 years old and didn't really need to learn the alphabet anymore, but at least he would play this game with me.
So anyway, this game wasn't all pure educational joy. The sprite collision between your character and the walls is pretty bad and you'll find yourself getting stuck on the walls a lot, slowing down the gameplay a bit. The graphics of the picture in the middle of the maze are also a problem. Now I know the C64 had pretty good graphics back in the day, but even then, you have to use your imaginations to figure out what that weird picture in the middle of the maze was. Is that the sun? But it's blue and white and kind of pointy? What is that? A Japanese style fan? Yes some of the pictures are a little weird but you can usually figure out what it is by the letters that are in the maze.
Overall this game is an old favourite of mine, and it still sticks out in my head as an educational game that was actually fun. Now I haven't played a lot of educational games these days but the ones I have played still haven't beaten this old classic.
